Benazir Bhutto’s 8th death anniversary being observed today

LARKANA (Pakistan) – The 8th death anniversary of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto is going to be observed today all across the country.

Eight years passed since the first ever female prime minister of Pakistan was assassinated after addressing an electoral rally at Rawalpindi’s Liaquat Bagh on December 27, 2007.

Qura’an Khawani and fateha khawani would be held at various cities of the country including Garhi Khuda Baksh Bhutto. Party workers will donate blood for paying tribute to the former prime minister.

People are travelling from different parts of the country to Larkana and Garhi Khuda Baksh, where she is buried at the family mausoleum.

Moreover, an area of 3km the tombs of the Bhutto family has been declared a red zone and 22 police checkpoints have been set up to meet any untoward incident.

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has also reached Larkana along with his sister Bakhtawar Bhutto Zardari. His aunt Faryal Talpur and Home Minister Sohail Anwar Sial were accompanied the party chairman.

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari will also donate blood at Naudero House in Larkana district along with other central and provincial leaders.

In a statement, Bilawal said the blood donations collected from all over the country would be given to injured soldiers of the armed forces in war against terrorism and patient welfare societies.

Benazir Bhutto, an icon of Pakistani politics was a leader far ahead of her times and a symbol of a progressive and liberal Pakistan.  She was a bridge between the true spirit of Islam and the Western world.

She wanted USA to respect Pakistan’s sovereignty and was critical of the unauthorized military operations against Pakistan.

She wanted to make Pakistan an economic hub of Asia by having good relations with its neighbouring countries Afghanistan on its North West, China on its North, India on its East and Iran on its West.

In her last speech on December 27 at Liaquat Bagh she said, “I put my life in danger and came here because I feel this country is in danger. People are worried. We will bring the country out of the crisis.”
