Carrefour to invest $5.6m in Pakistan with the opening of 10th store

Federal Minister for Food Security emphasized on local sourcing of fresh produce

Carrefour, owned and operated by the UAE-based Majid Al Futtaim in Pakistan, has further poured Rs1 billion ($5.6 million) in addition to its current investment of Rs9.5 billion in Pakistan by opening 10th store of the hypermarket chain in Gujranwala on Monday, Jan. 10.

Majid Al Futtaim has played a key role in driving economic growth in the Middle East and North Africa and is considered a leading foreign direct investor. The company said in a statement that by opening its 10th store in the country, Carrefour has expressed its great confidence in the retail sector of Pakistan, adding that it desires to support the growth and prosperity of the communities it is a part of.

Carrefour Pakistan, through its latest store, plans to offer more than 25,000 products in various categories including consumer goods, fresh foods, electronics, home accessories, and several others. The company said by offering a wide range of products, “it aimed to bring convenience to the daily lives of shoppers and provide economic support to 170 households in the city through job creation and local sourcing of products.”

Federal minister for national food security Syed Fakhar Imam on Monday emphasized the need for local sourcing of fresh agricultural produces and appreciated the role of Carrefour in connecting supermarkets with farms directly.

Inaugurating the Carrefour hypermarket in Gujranwala, the federal minister said that local sourcing of agriculture products will benefit the local farming community, ultimately benefiting the Pakistan economy.

The inauguration ceremony was also attended by Thierry Joulin, Chief Operating Officer Majid Al Futtaim Retail, and Country Manager of Carrefour Pakistan Umer Lodhi.

Besides offering a hassle-free in-store shopping experience for quality products at its ten stores in Pakistan, Carrefour also offers its delivery service through the Carrefour Pakistan app.
