Imran Khan to be sworn in as PM on August 18: PTI

Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan will be sworn in as prime minister on August 18, his party said on Friday, announcing it has the numbers to form a coalition government in the Centre.

“In a historic moment, Imran Khan will take the oath (as prime minister) on August 18,” Faisal Javed Khan, a PTI senator and Imran’s close aide, said in televised comments in Islamabad.

Pakistan’s President Mamnoon Hussain has called a session of the new National Assembly, the lower house of parliament, starting August 13. On that day, newly-elected members will take oath of their office. Elections for the speaker, deputy speaker and the Leader of the House will take place.

PTI spokesperson Fawad Chaudhry on Thursday said: “Imran will be elected prime minister of the country within the first round of vote in the Parliament.” He further claimed that his party has the support of 180 members in National Assembly.

Meanwhile, opposition parties, including Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA), have decided to field their own candidates for prime minister and National Assembly Speaker.
