OIC appoints special envoy on Afghanistan

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has decided to appoint a special envoy on Afghanistan and the OIC and the United Nations had agreed to work together in Afghanistan.

Ambassador Tarig Ali Bakheet will serve as the special envoy on Afghanistan to the OIC Secretary-General. He would be supported by a secretariat and the OIC Office in Afghanistan to coordinate aid and assistance efforts.

The OIC special envoy will coordinate delivery of humanitarian assistance and support, and is mandated to pursue economic and political engagement with Afghanistan.

Bakheet will be coordinating efforts for the supply of humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people.

This position was announced at the close of the 17th extraordinary session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers held in Islamabad, Pakistan.

Tariq Ali Bakheet was Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian, Cultural, and Social Affairs.
