Muhammad Waseem is the first Pakistani boxer to be listed as the number one boxer in the flyweight category

Pakistan Boxing star and two-time silver flyweight world champion Muhammad Waseem has topped World Boxing Council’s latest rankings.

Waseem also becomes the first Pakistani and South Asian boxer, who have been listed as the number one boxer in the flyweight category by World Boxing Council.

The flyweight class, in boxing, includes fighters weighing 49 kg (108 lb) and up to 52 kg (112 lb).

Muhammad Waseem already brought high honours for Pakistan who is progressing so quickly at the international level, and has achieved this feat by knocking out big names in the standings.

Boxing star Waseem during media talk after becoming World top-ranked boxer said, “It is really a great honour for me to achieve the top rank.

“It will further motivate me and still in me more power and energy to help me in my career,” the boxer said. He also thanked Pakistani government for support as he has received the announced grant.

On July 17, 2016, Waseem for the first time became the pioneer Pakistani boxer to have clinched the world silver belt by beating Jether Oliva of Philippines in Seoul. It was a rare feat from the fighter as he lifted the title in only his fourth fight of his career.

Waseem then, on November 27, 2016, successfully defended his crown by upstaging dangerous Giemel Magramo of the Philippines also in South Korea after a tough 12-round battle.

His promoter Andy Kim said he was waiting for the WBC’s input about Waseem’s future fight. Kim is confident that Waseem is much capable of winning the world title.

Waseem has begun his training in Quetta to fight for the gold title in the flyweight category later in September this year.

In the latest rankings of flyweight category released by the WBC, Mexico’s Francisco Rodriguez Junior and Great Britain’s Andrew Selby hold the second and third spots respectively.
