Pakistani youth discuss climate change at UN forum

ISLAMABAD – On the occasion of the United Nations 70th anniversary, the United Nations System in Pakistan on Thursday conducted a workshop called United4Climate: Pakistani Youth for Climate Change at the UNIC, Islamabad.

This interactive forum provided a platform to promote and to enhance outreach to the Pakistani youth by involving them on the very current and relevant theme of climate change.

The event brought together young people from different educational institutions and representatives from youth/environmental organizations, who gave educational presentations and speeches. Over 100 youngsters participated in the workshop.

Speaking on the occasion, H.E. Ms. Margaret Adamson, Australian High Commissioner highlighted the importance of climate change in today’s world with particular reference to Pakistan.

Pakistan’s large youth population are already key actors in managing their country’s response to climate change – as students, technical workers, farmers and in other walks of life, they face a threat which will continue to shape Pakistan into the future” she said.

Director UNIC Islamabad , Mr. Vittorio Cammarota talking about the importance on raising awareness on Climate Change among Pakistani youth said: “The world this year is engaged in efforts to maintain a favorable climate. And through this workshop we want to empower Pakistani youth to contribute to the global discussion on climate change so that a debate on the topic is generated and the voice of Pakistani youth is heard in the global context of the issue of climate change”

Mrs. Zeba Husain, Director, Mashal school also participated and brought with her the example of how her school for the less fortunate children was imparting knowledge on the very important theme of climate change.

Children present in the workshop took away valuable information on the topic and were encouraged to express their view of climate change in form of the essays and drawings. Their works will be later published in a booklet that will be presented and distributed at the 2015 Paris Climate Conference, as contributions of Pakistani youth to the global conversation on climate change.
