In many places, New Year’s Eve celebrations were muted or cancelled for the second straight year due to a surge of coronavirus infections driven by the highly contagious Omicron variant.

In New York City, the traditional event in Times Square allowed fewer revellers and everyone was required to wear a mask.

As midnight struck and 2021 retreated into history, Sydney’s world-renowned New Year’s Eve fireworks display began, lighting up the harbour to welcome the new year.

London’s spectacular New Year’s Eve fireworks display has been canceled for a second year running due to the pandemic. The event is usually attended by up to 100,000 people with the London Eye, Tower Bridge and the Houses of Parliament featuring prominently.
