World Cup 2018: Messi takes Argentina to Top 16

Argentina beat Nigeria 2-1 and qualify for the round of 16 in FIFA World Cup 2018

Argentina has qualified for the round of 16 in the World Cup after a spectacular finish from Marcos Rojo five minutes from time gave Jorge Sampaoli’s men the three points they needed to qualify.

Lionel Messi scored Argentina’s opener, but a second-half Nigeria penalty kick meant they were staring at the exit door until Marcos Rojo volleyed home the winner in the 86th minute.

Messi said Argentina “didn’t deserve to go out in the first round” as he and his teammates barely escaped elimination at the World Cup with a late 2-1 win over Nigeria on Tuesday.

In an enthralling game, Argentina stepped up the gears in the first half. Lionel Messi was at his best and proved to be the thorn in the side for the Nigerian defence.

However, Argentina were minutes away from being eliminated from the World Cup in the group stage, but thanks to late stunner bu Marcos Rojo that the team moved on to the round of 16.

Argentina has now set up a last 16 meeting with France.
