Azerbaijan Airlines has placed an order for eight Boeing 787 Dreamliners to support its long-haul fleet expansion plans.

The introduction of these highly efficient jets will allow the national flag carrier to open up new profitable routes from Azerbaijan and boost capacity for inbound tourism.

Azerbaijan Airlines, which currently operates a fleet of Boeing 757, 767, and 787 jets, is one of the largest carriers in Central Asia, serving 40 destinations across 25 countries.

The signing ceremony for the order was held at airlines’ hub in the capital city of Baku, where Jahangir Asgarov, the president of Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL), and Stan Deal, the president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, were present to celebrate the occasion.

“The signing of a contract with Boeing for the purchase of modern wide-body Boeing 787 Dreamliners is an important step in modernizing the fleet and increasing the level of AZAL air transportation,” Asgarov said. He thanked the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev for continuous support and attention to the country’s civil aviation sector.

AZAL is also expanding its European destinations and has recently announced the launch of a new Baku-Vienna-Baku route, starting May 2.

With orders from over 85 customers worldwide exceeding 1,600 units, the 787 Dreamliner has earned the title of the world’s fastest-selling twin-aisle aircraft.

“The 787 has helped position Azerbaijan Airlines as the leading carrier across Central Asia, with the airplane’s flexibility and capability opening Azerbaijan up to increased tourism and economic growth,” said Stan Deal.

The 787-8’s range reaches up to 13,530 km in a typical two-class configuration, enabling Azerbaijan Airlines to grow its network across Europe, Asia, and beyond, according to a statement from Boeing.
