Severe cold and dense fog blankets Islamabad, Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Sahiwal and other plain areas
ISLAMABAD – Dense fog disrupted life in several cities, including Peshawar, Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Multan, and Muzzafargarh and other parts of the country.
Due to severe cold and dense fog blanket over the province especially in Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Sahiwal and other plain areas, people’s normal life has suffered.
The motorway part from Peshawar to Islamabad was closed due to dense fog, turning all the traffic to G.T. Road while the drivers were advised to use fog lights during travelling.
Meanwhile due to low visibility, a trailer hit two motorcycles near Noor Kabra, Muzzafargarh, on DG Khan Road killing five persons, including two children and a woman.
On the other hand, gas load shedding was also seen in various areas where people were forced to make fire to stay warm during the extreme temperatures.
According to Pakistan Meteorological Department Punjab, same weather conditions are likely to continue for the next three to four days. But after a good rainy spell is expected from Friday and the weather outlook is likely to change, said experts.
Meanwhile, flights were also faced delay or even cancellation due to extreme weather condition. Sources told that the flights QR-632 from Doha to Islamabad, PA-231 from Abu Dhabi to Islamabad, PK-292 from Muscat, PK-234 and PK- 615 from Dubai, national airlines’ 452 were cancelled while the flights scheduled to take passengers to other countries including PK-233, QR-633, EU-232, PK-4232, QR-615, KU-206, TK-711, PK-786, PK-741, PK-201 and PK-301 also got affected.
Punjab Schools to Reopen After Jan 31 due to cold weather
Punjab Government Monday announced that private and public sector schools across the province will remain closed for five days due to recent wave of intense cold weather.
Punjab province Education Minister Rana Mashhood Ahmad Khan said a large number of children were catching flu and pneumonia as temperatures fell to as low as four degrees Celsius (39.2°F) in the capital, Lahore, and a severe shortage of gas left schools unable to heat themselves.
Education minister told, ‘Two days ago, parents complained about the harshness of weather and diseases to children.’
Schools will reopen on February 1, he added.
Earlier the educational institutions remained closed for winter vacations from December 22, 2015 to December 31, 2015.
