China COVID cases hit two-year with over 5000 infections in 24 hours

With more than 5000 cases of coronavirus in one day, China reported an all-time high disease spread, on Tuesday, since the start of the pandemic two years ago in 2019.

“The COVID-19 epidemic situation in China is grim and complex, making it more difficult to prevent and control,” said a Chinese official of the National Health Commission on Tuesday, admitting the adverse situation of Coronavirus in the country.

The Covid-19 pandemic initially emerged in the central city of China, Wuhan, in late 2019. However, the country had successfully controlled a wide outbreak of disease through its stringent “zero-covid” strategy, under which a large section of population was confined to homes while observing strict lockdowns.

However, Tuesday was the sixth consecutive day when more than 1000 new cases of coronavirus were recorded in China.

“With an increasing number of positive cases, the difficulty in preventing and controlling the disease is also increased,” the health official added.

Current Covid situation in China:

According to the National Health Commission, the current situation of the pandemic in China:

  • A total of 3,507 domestically transmitted cases with confirmed symptoms were reported on Monday across more than a dozen provinces and municipalities.
  • Out of 31 provinces in China, 28 have reported corona cases since the past week
  • The Chinese mainland has reported 15,000 corona cases during this month
  • China reported 5,154 cases, including 1,647 “silent carriers” on Tuesday.
  • The northeastern province of Jilin with a population over 21 million people, has been hit the hardest with 4,067 covid cases reported there alone.

Measures taken to curb the spread:

The following measures have been taken in China, to curb with the current worsening situation of corona in the country:

  • Quite a lot of cities, including Shenzhen and Shanghai, have administered strict lockdowns, forcing local and international industries to shut their businesses as part of the measures to contain the virus’ spread.
  • Five makeshift hospitals have been built in the Changchun and Jilin with a capacity of 22,880 beds to manage the COVID-19 patients.
  • Provincial authorities purchased 12 million antigen testing kits to boost its testing capacity.
  • To combat COVID-19, around 7,000 soldiers have been mobilized to assist with anti-virus measures.
  • 1,200 retired soldiers have volunteered to work in quarantine and test sites, according to the report.
