Chinese Ambassador calls on FM Qureshi in Islamabad

China’s newly-appointed Ambassador Nong Rong met with Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi. Qureshi congratulated Nong on his appointment and lauded his credentials. The two discussed the Pakistan-China bilateral relations, cooperation in fighting COVID-19, CPEC, and matters of regional and international interest during the meeting.

Ambassador Nong thanked the Foreign Minister for the good wishes conveyed by him and maintained that Pakistan was his second home. He also emphasized on the strengthening of the ties between the two historically close allies, especially with the CPEC projects now in full swing. CPEC is a crucial cog in China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).  

The 53-year-old replaces Yao Jing, who was the Chinese ambassador to Pakistan since December 2017. Prior to the current appointment, Nong was the director of the Ethnic and Religious Affairs Committee of Guangxi Autonomous Region until September 2020.

The Foreign Minister thanked China for its continuous support to Pakistan on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, including at the United Nations. Qureshi also emphasized the quick completion of the CPEC projects as it will allow the Gawadar Port to achieve its full potential faster.

The Ambassador also called upon Adviser to the Prime Minister on Finance and Revenue Dr. Abdul Hafeez Shaikh at the finance division in Islamabad. Shaikh congratulated Nong on his appointment. The two discussed matters of importance related to the cooperation between the two countries in the various sectors of the economy.
