Pakistan Navy will continue to support and promote sport of golf in Pakistan: Chief of the Naval Staff

KARACHI – Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Muhammad Zakaullah said that Pakistan Navy will continue to support sports, particularly golf, across Pakistan and create opportunities for people to excel at their chosen sport.

Admiral Muhammad Zakaullah was speaking at the concluding ceremony of 21st Chief of Naval Staff Open Golf Championship 2016 which was held at Karachi Golf Club.

Matloob Ahmed Shabbir Iqbal won the top prize in the Professionals category while M. Sharif won the Amateurs category. Ms. Aania Farooq and Ms. Joo Jung Ja won in the Ladies (Gross) and Ladies (Net) categories respectively. Junaid Irfan and Asad Ali Khan won in the Juniors Class A while Nadir Khan and Shayan Ameen won in the Juniors Class B category.

The four-day event was held from 4 – 7 August and continues to be the highest prize money golf event of Pakistan offering Rs 6.0 million and in addition Rs 0.5 M for caddies / semi Professional Match of KGC. The championship was open to various categories which include 36 holes each for caddies, semi-professionals, senior professionals and junior professionals, 18 holes for seniors and ladies, 9 holes for veterans and 72 holes matches each for Professionals and Amateurs.

Addressing the ceremony, Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Muhammad Zakaullah strongly condemned the tragic Quetta terrorist attack which left more than 70 people dead and several injured. While expressing his sympathies to bereaved families

The Naval Chief said that our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families and declared the incident a great loss to the nation. He termed the incident a gutless act. He said that such cowardly acts by the terrorists cannot deter the morale of our nation and particularly our armed forces who have made substantial sacrifices to protect the country against this menace.

Later, the chief guest, while commending the sportsman spirit of the participants said that Pakistan Navy will continue its efforts and support for the promotion of this sport and organize Golf Championships of this stature every year. The Naval Chief also praised efforts of Karachi Golf Club Staff for organizing such a mega event. The admiral also said that golf undoubtedly is fast becoming a popular sport among all ages including ladies and the youth in the country. He expressed his satisfaction over the keen participation and healthy contest during the course of this championship. He also congratulated the prize winners and expressed his special gratitude to the sponsors for their continued support to the game of golf.

The ceremony was attended by a large number of dignitaries from Armed Forces, civil society, and golfers.
