Islamabad — The U.S.-Pakistan Centers for Advanced Studies in Energy (USPCAS-E) at the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), University of Engineering and Technology (UET), and Arizona State University (ASU), have recently announced energy-specific research grants through a nationwide call for research proposals.
The research grants, funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), will provide academic researchers working with Pakistani industry the opportunity to conduct independent energy-related research that will address the day-to-day energy challenges faced by Pakistanis. The research projects will focus on power systems, electric grids, energy policy, solar energy, photovoltaic, thermal energy and materials. Each grant will be for a maximum duration of 12 months.
The USPCAS-E program is a partnership between NUST, UET Peshawar, and ASU focusing on applied research projects relevant to Pakistan’s energy needs. The USPCAS-E center has multiple goals including curriculum development, research, establishment of new laboratories, and visitor programs.
Under the umbrella of the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC), the centers at both NUST and UET are expected to become Pakistan’s premier sustainable energy research centers. Sound governance, modernized curricula, and new teaching strategies will produce the next generation of graduates with a focus on applied energy research. This program will also set new standards for supporting the success of both women and disadvantaged youth in the engineering profession.
This initiative is part of USAID’s larger $127 million investment that will harness applied research to find innovative and practical solution for Pakistan’s energy, water, agriculture, and food security challenges.
