Five UAE officials among 56 killed in Afghanistan bombing

KABUL (Afghanistan): Five UAE diplomats and 56 others were killed in a bombing in Kandahar, southern Afghanistan, United Arab Emirates official authorities confirmed. While the UAE’s ambassador to Afghanistan escaped the attack with injuries.

Early this morning, Kandahar was shocked with twin Taliban suicide bomb blasts after attacking parliament, who killed at least 56 people including five UAE diplomats.

Police Chief Officer Kandahar General Abdul Raziq told media that the Provincial Governor Homayun Azizi’s guest house was the focus of attackers. Gov. Homayun Azizi and UAE Ambassador Juma Mohammed Abdullah al-Kaabi were busy in meeting also got wounded. Samim Khapalwak the governor house spokesperson, said that “Homayun Azizi was in a critical condition”.

Spokesperson primarily told media that Kandahar Deputy Governor Abdul Ali Shamsi and Yama Quraishi, an Afghan diplomat to the U.S. were also reported dead during bomb blast.

On the other side, Taliban denied all the claims regarding Kandahar blast on any diplomats. In a tweet, Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi said the bombing was an “enemy internal dispute, not connected with Mujahidin” Khaama Press news agency reported.

Police Officer General Abdul Raziq also confirmed the number of causalities and injured caused during Kandahar Blasts.

United Arab Emirates (UAE) Foreign Ministry said in a statement “The UAE ambassador’s visit to Kandahar was on humanitarian mission within the program of the UAE to support the brotherly Afghan people”.

“In these difficult moments, the ministry in coordination with the armed forces and the concerned state authorities as well as the Afghan government is following up the developments of this terrorist attack” the statement added.

The federation of seven sheikhdoms on the Arabian Peninsula said it would immediately fly the nation’s flag at half-staff in honour of the dead from the attack in Kandahar.

President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and National Security Advisor Mohammad Hanif Atmar expressed their sorrow and condemned the Kandahar suicide attack.
