Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy sentenced to jail in a historic ruling

Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy has been handed a one-year prison term and two-year suspended sentence after being found guilty of corruption.

Nicolas Sarkozy, 66, is the first former president in the modern history of France to go on trial for corruption.

The former president from 2007 to 2012 had played an “active role” in forging a “corruption pact” with his lawyer Thierry Herzog and former magistrate Gilbert Azibert to obtain information on a separate investigation into political donations. Herzog and Azibert were also found guilty and handed prison sentences.

Sarkozy dismissed the charges as an “insult to my intelligence”.

The court said Sarkozy did not need to serve time in jail which means he will be detained at home with an electronic bracelet.
