Ghazanfar Mehmood emerges as new Champion of 6th CNS Amateur Golf Championship

LAHORE – Ghazanfar Mehmood of Garden City Golf Club Rawalpindi won the 6th Chief of the Naval Staff Amateur Golf Championship that concluded at the internationally ranked Royal Palm Golf and Country Course on Sunday.

Mr Malik Muhammad Rafique Rajwana, the Governor Punjab was the Chief Guest of the occasion.

The three-day event was held from 25 – 27 Nov and has become quintessential of National Golf Events since its debut in 2011. Around 381 enthusiast golfers participated in various categories which include amateurs, seniors, ladies and juniors.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Malik Muhammad Rafique Rajwana, the Governor Punjab congratulated the winning golfers and appreciated skills, dexterity and sportsman spirit displayed by all, throughout the event. He accentuated the services of Pakistan Navy for the promotion of sports in the country besides, defending maritime frontiers of Pakistan.

He said that the holding of such event in the provincial metropolis with rich traditions is not only delightful but an achievement in itself, and credit for this initiative goes to Pakistan Navy. He also lauded the organizers, sponsors and management of Royal Palm Golf & Country club for facilitating and extending all out support for this tournament.

Earlier, in his Welcome Address, the Organizer and Station Commander (Navy) Lahore, Cdre S M Shahzad thanked the Chief Guest for sparing his valuable time for gracing the closing ceremony. The Station Commander highlighted that Pakistan Navy, under the clear directions of Chief of the Naval Staff, besides undertaking its primary role of defending sea frontiers of Pakistan, has always remained at the fore-front in promoting sports activities in the country.

He added that promotion of golf has always been a priority for Pakistan Navy and hoped that this Golf Championship would hone the existing talent and help usher young golfers to the national scene. “Pakistan Navy will continue to support sports ventures like these in future as well” he underlined.

At the conclusion of this three days long amateur championship, skills and dexterity of experienced national golfer Ghazanfar Mehmood of Garden City Golf Club Rawalpindi with a gross score of 216 enabled him to stamp his name on this prestigious trophy.

In the final round, he did not let his nearest contender Aashiq Hussain of Multan Golf Club with a Gross score of 217 cows him down.

During the final holes, the challenger did make a herculean effort to curb the advance of Ghazanfar Mehmood but failed to make a dent big enough to stop him from making a successful dash to victory. Muhammad Rehman of Royal Palm Golf and Country Club Lahore with a Gross Score of 224 dropped down to 3 rd position. During the final round, the race for the title revolved around these three contenders.

In the contest for net honours, the top one was Farid Malik of Royal Palm Golf and Country Club Lahore with a net score of -5, followed by net runner-up Asif Bajwa of Defence Raya Golf Club Lahore with a net score of -1. Whereas, Hussain Hamid of Royal Palm Golf & Country Club Lahore clinched the 3 rd position with the gross score of PAR C.B.

The senior champion was Col Asif Mehdi of Defence Raya Golf Club Lahore with a Gross score of 78 who put up an impressive display of golf.

Javed A Khan of Gymkhana Golf Club Lahore with a Gross score of 80 was the runner-up whereas Imran Ahmed of Defence Raya Golf Club Lahore with Gross score of 81 C.B came third.

The invitational match trophy was won by Zafar Mehmood with a Gross score of 37. During the contest, he played exceedingly well. The net winner in Invitational match is Abdul Majeed Choudhry with a score of 29. On the other hand, Ali Imran won the longest drive prize and Naveed Ahmed Khan won the nearest to pin prize.

In the ladies section the gross winner is Zaib un Nisa of Royal Palm Golf and Country Club Lahore with a Gross score of 82. Rimsha Ejaz of Margalla Golf Club Islamabad with a Gross score of 87 gross remains runner up. Whereas, Shahzadi Gulfam of Garrison Golf Club Lahore with a Gross score of 91 acquired third position.

In the Juniors section the gross winner is Taimur Malik of Defence Raya Golf Club Lahore with a Gross score of 80. Rao Muhammad Haris of Rawalpindi Golf Club with a Gross score of 81 won second gross and Ali Aanish of Gujranwala Golf Club with a Gross score of 86 acquired third position.

The grand prize distribution ceremony was also attended by a large number of civil and military dignitaries and participating golfers.
