Pakistan Met Office predicts widespread rains with isolated heavy falls till Thursday

Heavy rainfall with gusty winds was reported on Wednesday in different parts of the country including Islamabad, Upper Punjab, Lower Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Eastern Baluchistan and Kashmir.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecasted a heavy downpour in these areas till Thursday, 29 June 2017.

The Meteorological Department further furcated that rain and thundershowers with strong gusty winds are expected at a number of places in upper Punjab (Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sargodha, Faisalabad divisions), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, lower Sindh (Hyderabad, Karachi, Mirpur Khas, Sh. Benazirabad divisions), Islamabad, FATA and Kashmir, while at scattered places in South Punjab (Sahiwal, Multan, Bahawalpur, D.G. Khan divisions), upper Sindh (Larkana, Sukkur divisions), eastern Balochistan (Zhob, Sibbi, Naseerabad, Kalat divisions) and Gilgit-Baltistan in the next 24 hours.

Spokesman of MET-Office informed that monsoon has already made onset in Pakistan on Monday and the monsoon incursion is likely to increase from Wednesday. A westerly wave in the meantime is expected to grip upper parts of the country. According to foreseen meteorological conditions, the detailed forecast for next two days is;

  • Rain/thundershowers with isolated heavy falls expected at a number of places in Islamabad, Upper Punjab (Rawalpindi, Sargodha, Gujranwala, Lahore and Faisalabad divisions), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Lower Sindh (Hyderabad, Karachi, Mirpurkhas, Shaheed Benazirabad divisions) & Kashmir during next 48 hours.
  • Rain/thundershowers with isolated heavy falls expected at scattered places of southern Punjab (Sahiwal, Multan, Bahawalpur, D.G.Khan divisions), upper Sindh (Larkana and Sukkar divisions), Eastern Balochistan (Zhob, Sibbi, Naseerabad & Kalat divisions) and Gilgit-Baltistan (G.B) during the period.
  • The heavy falls may generate flash floods in the vulnerable areas particularly in Barsati Nullahs of KP, Pothohar region, Gujranwala, DG Khan Divisions and Kashmir during the period.
  • Due to intermittent rains, there is risk of landslides in hilly areas of upper KP (Malakand, Hazara divisions), G.B and Kashmir.

Spokesman further informed that current heat wave conditions will subside due to this weather system all over the country. A few hailstorm events may occur in sub-mountainous areas of Punjab, Hazara division and Kashmir during the period.

He said heavy downpours are likely to trigger flash floods in nullahs of Gujranwala, Rawalpindi, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Kashmir besides landslading in the mountainous areas.
