India becomes third country after the United States and Brazil to surpass more than 300,000 COVID deaths

India’s overall death toll from COVID-19 crossed 300,000 on Monday, as it reported 4,454 deaths over the last 24 hours.

The grim figures means India is now the third country in the world after the United States and Brazil to surpass more than 300,000 coronavirus deaths.

The country also reported nearly 220,000 fresh cases, a big drop from its peak of over 414,000 in early May.

One of the major concerns in the fight against the virus is India’s faltering vaccination drive.

Doctors in India are also fighting a fatal “black fungus” infection affecting COVID-19 patients or those who have recovered from the disease amid a coronavirus threat.

The South Asian country’s total coronavirus cases are now at 26.75 million, while total fatalities are at 303,720, according to health ministry data.
