Avengers: Infinity War assembles highest world and US opening weekends of all time
Disney and Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War broke both the domestic opening weekend box office record and worldwide opening record with a massive $250 million domestically and $630 million worldwide.
“The latest Marvel juggernaut… opened with $630m worldwide, making it the largest global weekend tally in the history of film, and this was done without China,” which has a later opening, industry tracker Exhibitor Relations said.
Moreover, even this worldwide debut doesn’t include Russia (May 3) or China (May 11).
Infinity War, which features more than two dozen superheroes fighting to save the universe, brings together the stars of Marvel’s superhero stable, including Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther, Chris Evans’ Captain America and many more.
The 2 hour, 40 minute-long Infinity War is one of the largest films ever assembled with a production budget reportedly almost $US300 million
It was shot over 18 months back-to-back with a sequel due out next summer.
Worldwide, Black Panther has taken in $1.3 billion in sales; it and Infinity War have brought the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise to $15 billion all-time. Four other Marvel films, The Avengers (2012), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) Iron Man 3 (2013) and Captain America: Civil War (2016) have grossed more than a billion worldwide. It all adds up to Marvel superheroes overtaking Star Wars as the biggest money-maker at the box office.
