Floods in India, Bangladesh and Nepal kill 1,200 and leave millions homeless
The heavy rains and strong winds have killed more than 1,200 people in India, Bangladesh and Nepal while the death toll could rise.
The devastating floods have hit South Asia in one of the worst flooding disasters to have affected the region in years.
International aid agencies said thousands of villages have been cut off by the monsoon flooding with people being deprived of food and clean water for days.
In India, the flooding has affected more than 30 million people, in Indian’s eastern state of Bihar, around 514 people have died where 17.1 million have been affected, Disaster Management officials reported.
In the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, about 2.5 million have been affected and the death toll stood at 109 while the thousands of families are homeless.
The financial capital Mumbai is reportedly received about 12.7cm (5ins) of rain and been paralyzed public transport and leaving thousands of commuters stranded in their offices overnight.
In Nepal, around 1.4 million people have been affected in the result of monsoon rains, 150 people have been killed and many people are still missing due to landslides.
International Red Crescent Society said, more 90,000 homes have been destroyed in Nepal where dozens of people swept away in water in what the UN has called the worst flooding incident in the country in a decade.
According to the Red Cross, at least 7.1 million people have been affected in Bangladesh, 134 people have died and more than 5.7 million were affected directly as monsoon flooding submerged more than a third of the low-lying and densely populated country.
“I could not find a single dry patch of land,” said Matthew Marek, the head of disaster response in Bangladesh for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent, who made an aerial assessment of the worst affected parts of the country.
A spokesperson for the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies told media that 24 million people in Bangladesh, India and Nepal have been affected by the floods, with large areas of land submerged in water.
While United Nations reported at least 41 million people in Bangladesh, India and Nepal have been directly affected by flooding and landslides resulting from the monsoon rains, which usually begin in June and last until September.
