NSA meets Russian counterpart; discusses defense, cyber security cooperation

Pakistan and Russia on Wednesday held delegation-level talks in Moscow to discuss regional and international issues as well as steps to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries, National Security Division in Islamabad said.

National Security Advisor of Pakistan, Dr. Moeed Yusuf headed the six-member delegation that met Secretary of the Security Council of Russia, Mr. Nikolai Patrushev in Moscow. The two sides reviewed the whole gamut of bilateral relations between Pakistan and Russia and discussed in detail the regional and international issues, according to a statement issued by the National Security Division in Islamabad.

The agenda of the meeting included bilateral cooperation in matters of mutual interest including cyber security, defense, information, anti-terrorism, and anti-narcotics. The two sides also agreed to cooperate in the fields of economy and energy.

Collaboration among law enforcement agencies, special services, and defense ministries of Russia and Pakistan was also discussed in the meeting.

According to a Russian newswire, the focus of the meeting was particularly on increasing collaboration in the fields of cyber security and counter-narcotics. The two sides also discussed trade and economic cooperation; the newswire reported quoting the Russian Security Council (RSC).

Moeed Yusuf and his counterpart also exchanged views about the situation in Afghanistan and agreed to support all efforts to bring lasting peace in the war-torn South Asian country. The NSD said that the delegations “expressed grave concern over the looming humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan and urged the need for practical steps by the international community to avert the impending situation.”

Expressing satisfaction over the trajectory of the bilateral relations of Pakistan and Russia, the delegations agreed to remain engaged on all matters of mutual importance, according to the National Security Division of Pakistan.
