Pak Army sponsors KP’s female cyclist for Tanzania event

Samar Khan is national record holder of cycling over 4,693 meters by covering 1000km

The first Pakistani female Cyclist Samar Khan who has cycled on glaciers in Karakoram Range and now would be scaling highest peak Kilimanjaro in Africa.

Pakistan Army has promised to sponsor female cyclist Samar Khan who belongs to Dir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for high mountain cycling event in Tanzania, Africa.

According to Inter Services Public Relations on special instructions of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa, Pakistan  Army has decided to sponsor cyclist Samar Khan for her participation in the upcoming mountain cycling event in Tanzania.

Samar Khan is the first woman in the world to have cycled on the 4,500-metre-high Biafo glacier in Gilgit-Baltistan. She is Master’s degree holder in physics, enjoys paragliding, trekking, and mountain climbing in addition to cycling, which she has a penchant for.

She is the national record holder of cycling over 4,693 meters by covering 1000km (In tour to Khunjerab) besides being a trained MMA fighter, member of national youth assembly and a social activist.and  brand ambassador of ‘Ladies of Pakistan’.

Samar Khan said, Cycling along the Karakoram Highway over 10 days helped me overcome my fear of road cycling and once I had conquered my fears I was ready for a new challenge.

After many months of research, I decided to cycle on the Biafo Glacier because I wanted to draw attention to Pakistan’s glaciers, which are threatened by climate change.

In an interview Samar Khan said cycle in the northern areas where people are more open-minded and used to seeing women tourists. So, for my next trip I decided to cycle from Islamabad to Khunjerab with my friend Gul e Afshan Tariq.

She added generally people in the North are very hospitable. We were offered fruit and water by people along the Karakoram Highway and when my bicycle chain broke near a village, locals helped me repair it.

The athlete has been honoured with a few certificates by Tourism Department of Gilgit-Baltistan and is set to visit the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly as guest today.

ISPR statement added that Gen Qamar Javid Bajwa believes in youth is future of Pakistan and needs to be encouraged, enabled and facilitated in all fields.
