Pakistan and Germany discuss military, security cooperation

Pakistan’s Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif held meetings with the senior military leadership of Germany and discussed defence cooperation and regional stability issues.

Bilateral military to military relations, defence and security cooperation and training exchanges also came under discussion during the meeting.

Pakistan army chief is currently in Berlin for a two-day visit where he is expected to meet both the civil and military leadership of Germany, according to Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR).

General Raheel Sharif was warmly received by his German counterpart upon his arrival in Germany on Monday, ISPR media release said. Discussions regarding defence cooperation and regional stability were the main focus of the talks between the senior leadership of both countries.

During his separate meetings with German Army Chief and Defence Minister, bilateral military to military relations, enhanced defence and security cooperation and training exchanges came under discussion.

General Raheel Sharif met German Foreign Minister Frank Walter Steinmeier on Tuesday and discussed bilateral relations, regional security and peace in region.

German Foreign Minister acknowledged Pakistan’s contribution in war against terrorism and regional peace. He assured full German support to Pakistan in countering challenges it faces.

Army Chief also held an interactive session in Korber Foundation, a renowned think tank in Berlin. He explained in detail the challenges faced by Pakistan and its efforts towards peace and stability in the region. Army Chief said Pakistan is successfully concluding Operation Zarb-e-Azb and the armed forces have cleared entire FATA upto borders.

Acknowledging Pakistan Army accomplishments in the war on terror, German military leaders shared interest in learning from Pakistan’s military experience, said the DG ISPR. German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen especially appreciated Pakistan’s consistency and will in fighting terrorism.

The ISPR statement further said that General Raheel will visit the Czech Republic after concluding his visit to Germany.
