Pakistan and Iran reaffirm ‘One-China’ policy after Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan

Pakistan and Iran have reaffirmed their strong commitment to ‘One-China’ Policy after United States House Speaker Nancy Pelosi landed in Taiwan despite stark warnings from China.

In a statement, Foreign Office Spokesperson Asim Iftikhar Ahmad said Pakistan supports China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and is deeply concerned over the evolving situation in the Taiwan Strait.

“Pakistan strongly believes that inter-state relations should be based on mutual respect, non-interference in internal affairs,” said the spokesperson.

‘One-China’ policy means recognition that the People’s Republic of China (PRC) is the only legal government of the whole of China and its sole legal representative and that Taiwan is part of China.

The FO spokesperson said the recent developments could have serious implications for regional peace and stability. Ahmad said the world is already struggling to bear and overcome the critical security situation that arose due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, with destabilizing implications for international food and energy security.

“The world cannot afford another crisis that has negative consequences for global peace, security and economy,” he added.

Iran condemns Pelosi’s visit

The Islamic Republic of Iran also extended its support for one-China policy.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said Tehran respects “the territorial integrity of countries as the basis of its foreign policy and support for one-China policy in this framework is unquestionable.”

Kanaani said respect to the territorial integrity of countries is among the basic principles of the United Nations.

“Recent provocative behaviors” of tops U.S. officials in the internal affairs of China and “violation of its territorial integrity” is an example of America’s interference in different regions and countries across the globe and such a policy has “brought nothing except instability and escalation of tensions,” the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman added.

He went on to say that unilateralism and breach of international rules and commitments have become a habit in U.S. foreign policy.

China outraged over Pelosi’s visit

China also reacted promptly and strongly over the highest-level US visit to the island in 25 years, demonstrating its outrage with a burst of military activity in surrounding waters, summoning the U.S. ambassador in Beijing and halting several agricultural imports from Taiwan.

Nancy Pelosi arrived in Taiwan on an unannounced visit with a congressional delegation late on Tuesday, defying China’s repeated warnings. She was greeted by Taiwan’s foreign minister, Joseph Wu, and the US representative in Taiwan, Sandra Oudkirk.
