Pakistan and Denmark explore partnership on renewable energy projects

Pakistan has expressed interest to jointly work with Denmark on projects like manufacturing of wind turbines and solar panels to improve country’s renewable energy projects.

Pakistan and Denmark formed a joint technical working group to develop terms of refernec (TORs) for government-to-government agreements focusing on energy audit and demand forecast in the country.

The two countries discussed government-to-government collaboration in clean energy sector in a meeting between federal minister for energy Omar Ayub Khan with Danish technical energy team along with the Ambassador of Denmark Lis Rosenholm.

Special assistant to PM on power Tabish Gauhar and secretary power division Zafar Ali Bhutta also joined the meeting.

Danish Technical team presented the report on technical support to Pakistan in renewable energy and energy efficiency sectors and underscored the need of strategic energy cooperation between the two countries.

Both sides deliberated upon the findings and recommendations by Danish Energy Agency team on government-level-collaboration between Pakistan and.Denmark following the approval of Pakistan’s Alternative Energy Policy.

Energy Minister acknowledged the leading role of Denmark in clean and green energy at the global level and expressed desire to work with the European country to jointly manfacture wind turbines and solar panels to create new job opportuniies for Pakistanis. Pakistan’s new renewable energy policy would bring opportunities for investors due to transparent policies of the current government, Omar Ayub said.

Pakistan government had set an ambitious target to generate 25 percent of energy from renewable sources by 2025, and 30 percent by end of 2030 including 45 percent share of hydropower generation and 10 percent of nuclear energy into energy mix of the country. The aim is to promote renewable energy use and increase energy efficiency to meet the growing needs of energy in country.

Danish Ambassador while appreciating the government’s commitment to refurbish the energy sector, said that the new policy is more transparent as it provides a level playing field for all. “The agreements would be on based equal partnership and its focus is to set up a joint energy group for exchange of experience at both policy and operational level for long-term strategic collaboration in energy sector.”

Denmark is a global leader in renewable energy as more than 50 per cent of the country’s electricity was powered by wind and solar in 2020.
