Pakistan, EU to cooperate in energy conservation

European Investment Bank keenly observing the fast expanding power sector in Pakistan

Pakistan and the European Union (EU) have agreed upon the cooperation of Energy Conservation sector and Energy Efficiency.

This was decided in a meeting between Federal Minister for Power Division, Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari and EU Ambassador Jean Francois Captain is Islamabad.

For this purpose, both members decided that soon Power Division will send a high-level delegation of government officials and private sector experts to the EU to participate in a workshop with European experts and professionals.

It was further agreed that the European Investment Bank will be invited to the subject workshop to explore different options relating to financing the energy-related projects in Pakistan.

Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari said after meeting that after having successfully bridged the demand and supply gape, now it is of utmost importance that the consumers should be educated on the usage of electricity.

Due to awareness, we will be able to decrease our cost and save money for the consumers but also help inefficient utilization of the existing generation capacity as one megawatt saved is far better than one megawatt generated.

He highlighted that the EU was already working closely with the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government on a number of renewable energy projects, most of which were hydroelectric power plants.

The federal minister also hopes that soon European Investment Bank and other EU assistance partners will help us in the establishment of Pakistan’s First Renewable Energy Institute.

Both the sides also agreed on the appointment of focal persons to frequently interact on matters relating to the energy cooperation and efficient utilization.

At the end, Mr. Jean Fancois Captain thanked the Federal Minister for the warm welcome accorded to him and said European investment Bank is keenly observing the fast expanding power sector in Pakistan and EU will continue to provide assistance to Pakistan in the energy sector.
