Pakistan hosting second largest number of refugees worldwide at 1.4 million

Pakistan being an Islamic neighbouring country has accommodated a large number of Afghans refugees for the last three decades. Afghans have migrated from Afghanistan to Pakistan due to at least two times wars in Afghanistan.

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has said that currently 60 million people in the world are refugees whereas Pakistan is hosting the second largest number of 1.4 million refugees in the country.

In Pakistan, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees –UNHCR  is looking after these refugees, while Pakistan has given them legal status in the country until the end of 2017.

These 1.4 million refugees, makes Pakistan the second country after Turkey to host the largest number of refugees out of which a large number of them comprises of Afghan nationals, BBC reported

Apart from Afghanistan, the devastating conflicts, violence and persecution in places like Syria and South Sudan had left a record 65.6 million people uprooted from their homes by the end of 2016, UN released a report on Monday.

In 2016, some 340,000 people fled the violence in South Sudan into neighbouring Uganda. That was more than any other country – even more than the 200,000 people estimated to have fled Syria.

The UNHCR’s report said the war in Syria was “the world’s biggest producer of refugees,” about 5.5 million, but the conflict in South Sudan also dramatically drove up numbers of displaced people from the African country to 1.87 million.

According to the report, 84 percent of the world’s 22.5 million refugees were in low or middle income countries, with a third in the world’s least developed nations.

There are 65.6 million displaced people in the world – more people than live in the UK. Of these, following list shows statistics of refugees and hosting countries.
