Pakistan, US vow to stay engaged as PM Abbasi meets US VP Mike Pence

Pence says that Pakistan has much to gain from partnering with our effort in the region

Pakistan and the United States have agreed to resolve mutual issues of peace, stability and economic prosperity in the region through dialogue.

The agreement grew during a meeting between Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi Vice President United States Mike Pence on the sidelines of UN General Assembly session in New York Wednesday.

The two leaders held discussions in a cordial atmosphere. Both sides discussed issues relating to bilateral relationship as well as peace and stability in Afghanistan and the region.

Prime Minister shared Pakistan’s concern and views with regard to the US strategy for South Asia, both leaders agreed to use constructive approach to carry forward the relationship, which has been for the last seven decades.

Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua briefed media persons that the meeting between PM Abbasi and Pence was 45-minute long and was a good meeting.

Janjua said the two sides also agreed to continue negotiations over the Afghanistan issue and it was decided that US delegation would visit Pakistan by coming month.

Mike Pence said in a statement on Twitter he reiterated President Trump’s belief that “Pakistan has much to gain from partnering with our effort in the region” during his meeting with the Pakistani leader.

According to the media Mike Pence also said that United States attaches great importance to Pakistan and wants a long term partnership with Islamabad for peace and security in the region.

Ties between Islamabad and Washington have been terse since Trump announced a new policy for Afghanistan and South Asia in his first speech as commander-in-chief, in which he accused Pakistan of “harbouring agents of chaos” and “providing safe havens to terrorists”.

Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi also met Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the sidelines of the UNGA Session in New York.

The two leaders emphasized that Pakistan and Turkey should continue to attach special focus on enhancing economic cooperation and work together for early finalization of the Free Trade Agreement for boosting the bilateral trade.
