Pakistan, Uzbekistan to establish Joint Security Commission

Pakistan and Uzbekistan signed a protocol on Tuesday for the establishment of a Joint Security Commission to “strengthen coordination on security and regional connectivity” between the two countries.

The Commission’s inaugural session was also held afterward by the respective delegations of the two countries led by Dr. Moeed Yusuf, Pakistan’s National Security Advisor, and Lt. Gen. Victor Makhmudov Secretary of the Security Council of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

“Pleasure to announce that Pakistan & Uzbekistan today signed a historic Protocol on Joint Security Commission, followed by the inaugural session of the Commission. This will help strengthen coordination on security and regional connectivity between our two brotherly countries” said Mr. Yusuf in a tweet.

The agreement covered various matters of bilateral interests including security-related issues and the establishment of a coordination mechanism between Pakistan’s National Security Division and the Security Council of Uzbekistan, said the PR.

Topics Covered in the Inaugural Session:

According to an official communiqué, the following topics were discussed by the two delegations during the inaugural session;

  • Various aspects of the newly formed joint security commission
  • Ways to  make the commission effective
  • Steps for making the commission mutually beneficial
  • Changing situation of war-torn Afghanistan
  • The need to remain constructively engaged with Afghan issue

The second session of the Joint Security Commission is expected to be held in Uzbekistan next year.

Uzbek Delegation’s Islamabad Visit:

On the invitation of the National Security Advisor, Dr. Moeed W. Yusuf, Secretary of the Security Council of the Republic of Uzbekistan H.E. Lt. Gen. Victor Makhmudov, heading a five-member delegation, arrived in Islamabad today on a three-day visit.

According to the statement, the following key events will take place during the visit:

  • Signing and inaugural session of Joint Security Commission
  • Lt. Gen. Makhmudov’s calls to PM Imran Khan and COAS Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa.
  • A visit to Torkham Border and briefing on recent situation.
  • Reception of cargo trucks from Uzbekistan via Afghanistan as part of the Pakistan-Uzbekistan connectivity initiative.
