Pakistan has always encouraged the DPRK and Republic of Korea to resume meaningful negotiations

Pakistan has welcomed the recent talks held between the Republic of Korea (RoK) and Democratic Peoples’ Republic of Korea (DPRK).

Pakistan says these would lead to lasting peace, prosperity, stability, reconciliation and cooperation in the region.

In a statement, the Foreign Office spokesperson Dr Muhammad Faisal has said that Pakistan welcomed talks between North Korea and South Korea.

He said Pakistan hoped the new phase of talks between the two sides would help ease tensions in the Korean Peninsula.

Pakistan has always encouraged the DPRK and RoK to resume meaningful negotiations and supported all efforts for smooth reunification of the Korean Peninsula including the two Summits between North and South Korea in June 2000 and 2007.

FO further said Pakistan’s consistent position that all relevant parties should comply with their international obligations, pursue the path of dialogue and diplomacy to reduce tensions and work towards achieving a comprehensive solution.

Last week, officials from North and South Korea met face-to-face for the first time in two years, with the North agreeing to send a delegation to the Games the most significant thaw in relations between the neighbouring states in years.

In this talks, both sides had a sincere discussion on the practical matters related to the performances by the north side’s art troupe to be dispatched to the south side’s area with the 23rd Winter Olympics as an occasion and adopted a joint press release.

These talks were the first high-level engagement between the two countries after December 2015 because of North Korea’s refused to denuclearization or a permanent peace treaty to formally end the Korean War.

South Korea has unilaterally banned several North Korean officials from the entry in response to Pyongyang’s ramped-up missile and nuclear tests, held despite international pressure.
