Pakistani, Australian PMs discuss COVID, Afghanistan, and bilateral ties on phone

The two PMs expressed satisfaction over the current relations of the two countries

Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan and Australian premier Scott Morrison held a phone call that discussed a host of matters of mutual interests including novel coronavirus, the Afghan peace process, and bilateral trade.

The two PMs discussed the COVID-19 related efforts in their respective countries. “The smart lockdown strategy and other measures taken by the government had led to significant containment of the pandemic in Pakistan,” Imran told his counterpart. “Prime Minister Scott Morrison shared his country’s efforts to manage COVID-19 pandemic,” as per the official statement. Morrison also noted Pakistan’s positive role in the Afghan peace process. He invited Prime Minister Imran Khan to visit Australia as well.

Khan and Morrison were also content with the current state of trade between the two countries and vowed to boost the cooperation for further mutual benefit.  

“While expressing satisfaction at the level of bilateral relations between the two countries, the prime minister stressed that there existed huge potential for further enhancing mutually beneficial cooperation in diverse fields,” the statement said. “The premier also highlighted the potential for enhanced trade and increased regional connectivity among the dividends of peace in Afghanistan.”

Australia and Pakistan have typically enjoyed good relations without any major hiccups. A significant number of Pakistani immigrants choose Australia as their destination. There is a strong Pakistan community representing the country in Australia. A boost in trade ties will definitely further help enhance Pakistan’s economy and push the exports of the country forward.
