Usman Institute of Technology, Karachi has installed about 198 solar panels of 320 Watts producing a total of 60kW

A private sector higher education institute ‘Usman Institute of Technology Karachi’ became Pakistan’s premium technology institution, shifted to solar power to effectively meet the institute’s increasing electricity needs.

UIT kicked off energy conservation drive in August of last year. About 198 solar panels of 320 Watts each in January 2017 according to university administration.

This energy conservation project is producing a total of 60 kW. The installation now meets about 15 percent of the institute’s total power needs.

Usman Institute of Technology is Pakistan’s leading technology institution offering undergraduate and graduate level programs in Engineering and Computer Sciences.

Usman Institute of Technology Karachi is one of the early age private universities established in 1994. it is affiliated with the NED University of Engineering & Technology.

The Head of HR and Administration, UIT, Ahson Nasim explaining about energy conservation project said, “Being Pakistan’s leading technology education provider, we at Usman Institute of Technology deem it our responsibility to educate our student, faculty & staff about energy conservation and do what’s right for the environment.”

This also includes choosing the right sources of electricity; conventional power plants use a lot of non-renewable energy resources produce electrical power.

“One of the major advantages of solar energy is the lack of maintenance that is required in the long run” Ahson Nasim added.

“The systems do need slight maintenance every now and then, but in the long run, the costs are minimal. This means that once the initial investment has been made, there is little that the owner of a solar energy system really needs to do.”

University has replaced normal ACs with inverter ones, reduced the length of air-conditioning pipes, replaced tube lights with LED lights, besides educating students, faculty and staff on turning off all electrical equipment when not in use.

After getting positive outcomes of the environment friendly initiative, the university aimed to extend solar system installation to meet a larger portion of its power needs and reduce power costs in the coming years.
