The powerlifters lifted aggregate weight of 280kg; 115kg during squat, 55kg during bench press, 110kg during deadlift
A group of Pakistani female weightlifters Saniha Ghafoor and Twinkle Sohail have secured four gold medals in the Oceania-Pacific Powerlifting Championship 2017.
Pakistani female powerlifter Saniha Ghafoor bagged gold medals in the 57-kilogramme category during the Championship Saturday morning.
The competition called “Oceania Pacific Powerlifting Championship” is being held at ark Avenue Convention Centre in Singapore. It started from 7 December and will end on December 10.
Saniha bagged these medals in the 57kg category for squat, bench press, deadlift and total weight, during the competition being held at Park Avenue Convention Centre in Singapore, Geo News reported.
The powerlifter lifted an aggregate weight of 280kg; 115kg during squat, 55kg during the bench press, 110kg during a deadlift.
Other Pakistani powerlifters competing in the event include Sybil Sohail (47kg), Twinkle Sohail (72kg), Rabbia Razzaq (84kg), Muhammad Ahmad Khan (105kg), Syed Nadeem Hashmi (105kg), Mahmood Heera (120kg) and manager Mohammad Rashed Mallik.
In 2015, Pakistan’s Twinkle Sohail also won a gold medal in the Asian Bench-Press Powerlifting Championship which was held in Muscat.
Earlier, Pakistan sent its biggest weightlifting contingent to Singapore for the Oceania Classic Championships and Pacific Invitationals. Debutant powerlifter Saniha Ghafoor feels it is high time that the country’s women make a mark in the sport.
Along with Saniha, 2015 Asian Championship gold medallist Twinkle Sohail will be representing the country in the 72kg category, Rabia Razzaq will be in the 84kg competition while Sybil Sohail will be showing her talent in 47kg.
The four-woman contingent makes it Pakistan’s biggest in any powerlifting event.
The championships in Singapore will be featuring 148 athletes from different countries including Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and China among others.
