Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-serving British monarch, dies at 96

Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-ruling monarch in British history, has died in Scotland. Her son Charles is now King Charles III.

She died peacefully at her estate in Balmoral, Scotland on the afternoon of Sept. 8, according to a statement from Buckingham Palace.

Her son, now King Charles III, said it “is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family.”

“We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world.”

The 96-year-old monarch visited more than 100 countries across six continents during her reign and was admired by people, politicians and religious leaders around the world.

Thousands gathered outside Buckingham Palace, in central London, when the flag was lowered to half-mast.

UK’s new Prime Minister Liz Truss made an address to the nation on the steps of Downing Street.

Liz Truss described the Queen as “the rock on which modern Britain was built”, whose death is a “huge shock” to the country and the world.

World leaders including Joe Biden, Olaf Scholz, and Emmanuel Macron have paid tribute, while leaders of Ireland, Pakistan, India, Israel, Canada and Ukraine others released statements expressing deep and sincere sadness at the news of the death of Queen Elizabeth.
