Renowned poet Jamiluddin Aali passes away at 90

KARACHI – Famous scholar and Urdu poet Dr Jamiluddin Aali passed in Karachi. He was admitted in a private hospital in Karachi for last three days. He died of heart attack.

Raju Jamiluddin, the son of Aali said “He will rule the hearts of the people of the motherland through his literary work and songs.”

He wrote famous patriotic songs like “Aye Watan Ke Sajelay Jawanoo”, Jeevay Jeevay Pakistan” “Hum Mustafavi Mustafavi Hain”, “Mera Paigham Pakistan”, “Ab Yeh Andaz-e-Anjuman Hoga”, “Hum Maain, Hum Behnain, Hum Baitiyan”, “Jo Naam Wahi Pehchan, Pakistan Pakistan”, “Aye Des Ki Hawaao, Kushboo Mein Bas Ke Jao”, “Itne Bade Jewan Sagar Mein, Tu Ne Pakistan Diya”,”Yeh Kavita Pakistani Hai”.

Aali was born in 1926 in a literary family of Delhi. His grandfather Nawab Allauddin Ahmed was a friend and student of great Urdu poet Ghalib. His father Sir Ameeruddin Ahmed Khan was also a poet, and his mother Syeda Jamila Baigum belonged to the family of Mir Dard.

He was an assistant at the ministry of commerce at Delhi in British India. He later passed CSS exam and got posted as an income tax officer in Karachi in 1952.

He was the founder member of PECHS and was elected as its secretary in 1957. He was an SEVP and member of the executive board at the National Bank of Pakistan and as adviser to the Pakistan Banking Council attached with finance ministers Ghulam Ishaq Khan and later Dr Mahbubul Haq. He retired from the NBP in 1990.

In poetry, he revived the classical form of doha and adapted it to Urdu, imparting a distinct South Asian Muslim cultural flavour to it while retaining its beauty. He also wrote ghazals, poems, lyrical ballads or geets.

Aali has left behind his wife three sons and two daughters.
