Russia strikes Kyiv as Western leaders meet in Germany G7 summit

Russia attacked the Ukrainian capital city of Kyiv early on Sunday, striking at least two residential buildings as the Western leaders met in Germany for the Group of Seven (G7) summit.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the missiles hit at least two residential buildings, and killed one person and injured six others, including a 7-year-old girl and her mother. AP journalists reported that emergency workers battling flames and rescuing civilians from the buildings.

The missile attack came in an apparent show of force by Russia as Western leaders meet in Europe for the G7 summit and to strengthen their military and economic support of Ukraine.

The G-7 leaders were set to announce the latest in a long series of international economic steps to pressure and isolate Russia over its war in Ukraine by banning imports of Russian gold.

“It’s more of their barbarism,” Biden said at the official welcome of the G7 summit in Germany standing alongside German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

A Ukrainian parliament member, Oleksiy Goncharenko, said on the Telegram app that preliminary information indicated that Russia launched 14 missiles toward the capital region and Kyiv.
