SAARC Sec Gen’s Pakistan visit raises hope for revival of regional connectivity

The recent visit of Secretary-General South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) to Pakistan and meeting with top leadership including Prime Minister Imran Khan has revived hopes that the 36-year-old association of South Asian nations may once be activated.

EsalaRuwan Weerakoon, SAARC Secretary-General, currently visiting Pakistan, paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Imran Khan on Dec. 24 and appreciated Pakistan’s positive efforts to keep engaged with SAARC.

According to the press release issued by the PM’s office, PM Imran Khan highlighted Pakistan’s assurance to work for mutual constructive goals and aims embodied in the SAARC charter. He further said that the regional corporation can provide a favorable and beneficial atmosphere to build economic cooperation which can enhance the living standards of the people of South Asia.

The Prime Minister also stressed strengthening cooperation on issues of common interest including poverty eradication, climate change, health issues, education, and energy integration.

In addition, the premier lauded SAARC Secretary-General’s commitment to further enhance and promote SAARC processes and guaranteed him the continuous support of the Pakistan Government in further consolidating regional collaboration under the SAARC ambit.

The Prime Minister hoped to host SAARC Summit in Pakistan when artificial obstacles created in its way would be removed.

Imran Khan condemned Sialkot incident

Prime Minister also expressed condolences on the death of Mr. Priyantha Kumara and strongly condemned the barbaric act. He reiterated that there was no justification whatsoever for such acts and that all necessary measures have been taken in order to promptly bring the perpetrators to justice.

The Secretary-General showed his gratitude to the Prime Minister for his guidance on SAARC related issues and guaranteed him that during his tenure he will make determined efforts to strengthen collaboration among member states in different fields for the benefit of all the countries of South Asia, said the statement.
