Senate Polls count down begins, PPP, MQM candidates with unopposed

ISLAMABAD: Election Commission has issued final list of contesting candidates for Senate Elections. According to the list 131 candidates are in the run for senate elections to be held on the fifth of next month.
According to the final list of candidates issued by the Election Commission of Pakistan, 16 candidates are contesting from Punjab, 12 from Sindh, 32 from Balochistan, and 27 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Similarly, 8 candidates would be contesting against two seats from Islamabad and 36 from FATA against four seats.
84 candidates would be contesting elections against general seats, 21 against seats reserved for women, and 18 against seats reserved for Ulema and technocrats.
PPP, MQM candidates win without elections
Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) candidates on February 28, had been elected unopposed in Senate on at least two women seats and two seats of technocrats, local media reported.
PPP’s Sassi Palejo and MQM’s Hina Nighat got elected on women seats in Senate without any opposition while PPP’s Farooq H Naik and MQM’s barrister Saif have been unofficially elected on technocrat seats.
MQM’s Ameenul Haq and Waseem Akhtar took their nomination papers back for general seats whereas Abdul Qadir Khanzada for technocrat seat. Similarly, Babar Ghouri and Gulfaraz Khattak took their nomination papers back for general seat while MQM’s Seema Zarin took papers back for woman seat.
While talking to the media outside the Pakistan Election Commission (ECP), Sindh Assembly member MQM’s Sardar Ahmed urged settlement of issues through talks. He said that the issue with PPP regarding the Senate election has been resolved.
Meanwhile Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) today released a final list containing names of six candidates for the upcoming Senate’s elections.
In a statement, PTI’s spokeswoman Shireen Mazari said that Mohsin Aziz, Shibli Faraz, Noman Wazir, Liaquat Tarkai, Samina Abid and JK Williams will contest the elections for the Upper House.
It also directed covering candidates to immediately withdraw their nomination paper
