Sharmeen Obaid vows to end hounor killing in Pakistan

Chinoy’s documentary, A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness, will be held at the Prime Minister’s Office on February 22

ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif met Oscar winning filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy at the Prime Minister House in Islamabad on Monday. During their meeting, naturally the topic of honour killing came up and Nawaz assured her of his full support to end the practice in Pakistan.

Premier acknowledged the efforts of Chinoy over highlighting the social issues through documentaries, also announced her Oscar nominated documentary ‘A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness’ premiere will be held in PM house on February 22nd.

A Girl in the the River: The Price of Forgiveness tells the story of 19-year-old Saba Qaiser, from the Pakistani province of Punjab, whose father and uncle shot her in the face and threw her in a river because she had married without her family’s consent.

Talking to Sharmeen Premier said, ‘The revolution brought by Islam in the world manifested through the life of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). It was the most successful movement for change of social reforms which has altered the course of history for all times to come. It was Islam which first recognized the rights of women.’

PM said, ‘Women are the most essential part of our society and I believe in their empowerment, protection and emancipation of achieving the shared goal a prosperous and vibrant Pakistan.’

Nawaz Sharif promised her that the government would do everything to remove the stain of honour killing from Pakistan.

‘All concerned authorities have already been directed to plug loopholes in the existing laws through consultations with stakeholders, in order to eliminate honour killings from Pakistan,’ PM said.

‘Social evils can be overcome through an effective partnership between the government and the civil society,’ urged the Prime Minister.

Sharmeen Obaid said, ‘I am proud that Pakistan has a Prime Minister who has taken a leading role to address the issue of honour killings in the country.’ She also appreciated the role of Maryam Nawaz in helping the government achieve its goals in the sector of education.

The meeting was also attended by Maryam Nawaz Sharif and SAPM Tariq Fatemi.
