The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) welcomed the induction of the Invincible-class submarine, Impeccable, in a homecoming ceremony held at RSS Singapura-Changi Naval Base on July 20.

The event, graced by Chief of Navy Rear Admiral Sean Wat, senior RSN officers, and submariners, marked a significant milestone in Singapore’s maritime defense capabilities.

Intensive sea trials

Upon its arrival, the vessel will undergo an intensive series of local sea trials and workup exercises before achieving full operational readiness. Meanwhile, the remaining Invincible-class submarine, Invincible, is assisting in training RSN submariners in Germany, while the last two submarines are progressing well in their project development.

The Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) of Singapore, on Thursday, announced that the trials are being conducted in preparation for the vessel’s commissioning and eventual operationalization. The commissioning will be carried out under the name RSS Impeccable.

Invincible-class submarines

The vessel is one of four Invincible-class submarines that boast state-of-the-art features, including high levels of automation, substantial payload capacity, enhanced underwater endurance, and ergonomics tailored to suit the Asian physique. These submarines are vital in strengthening the RSN’s capacity to safeguard Singapore and protect its crucial sea lines of communication.

Armed with eight tubes, the Impeccable is equipped to undertake various missions with versatility and efficiency. The submarine boasts impressive specifications, with a maximum surfaced speed exceeding 15 knots and 10 knots when submerged. It measures 70 meters in overall length, has a pressure hull diameter of 6.3 meters, and can displace 2,200 tonnes when submerged and 2,000 tonnes when surfaced.

Invincible-class submarines development

Singapore’s Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) signed a contract with TKMS to acquire the first two Type 218SG submarines in December 2013. Singapore signed a new contract in May 2017 for two additional Type 218SG submarines.

The four diesel-electric submarines, named Invincible, Impeccable, Illustrious, and Inimitable, will be a part of the Singapore Navy’s submarine long-term capability development and force renewal program and will also meet its operational requirements.

The induction of Impeccable into the RSN fleet marked a significant step forward for Singapore’s naval capabilities. As the nation strengthens its defense posture, the advanced features and capabilities of the Invincible-class submarines are set to play a crucial role in ensuring maritime security and safeguarding Singapore’s interests in the region.
