Sister Ruth Lewis hailed as “Pakistan’s Mother of Special Children” dies of COVID-19

Pakistanis are mourning the loss of Sister Ruth Lewis who dedicated more than 50 years to children with special needs.

The head of Dar ul Sukun (home for disabled children) died on Monday night at Aga Khan Hospital from complications of the novel coronavirus ar the age of 77.

At least 21 children at the charity organization had been infected with COVID-19 but she continued to serve them. She was taken to the hospital where she was placed on a ventilator.

Dar ul Sukoon (House of Peace) expressed its grief of passing away of the Sister in, who had been associated with the organization for many years, in a Facebook post. They applauded her for the inspirational work she did for the organization.

“All our children, nuns and staff are heartbroken, as we have lost a huge part of us. Please pray for the children to whom she has been a mother, for the nuns for whom she was a sister and a true inspiration and for all the Staff whom love her and will each day try to walk in her footsteps,” the statement read.

Another post recalled her services for the humanity. “Her services to the humanity in larger and to the destitute severely disabled children and elderly, socially displaced girls and boys is remarkable her service spans around 51 years.”

Services to humanity applauded

A number of well-known personalities applauded the services of Sister Ruth Lewis.

Governor Sindh Imran Ismail, described Sister Ruth as “a true inspiration” saying “Karachi would always remember her selfless services for the differently abled and socially displaced children and elderly.”

Advisor to Chief Minister Sindh on Law & Environment Murtaza Wahab cherished her services for the people.

Aseefa Bhutto Zardari remembered her selfless services for humanity and lamented the loss.

Senator Sherry Rehman also expressed her gratitude for the services performed by Sister Ruth Lewis.

Sister Ruth was a Roman Catholic nun, who received the Pride of Karachi Award over her contributions to the society and particularly the vulnerable in the society.
