A snowstorm in the Sahara desert has turned the normally sandy landscape into what looks like arctic tundra after up to 16 inches fell on areas of Algeria.
The current temperature of world’s largest hot desert plummeted this week as a freak snowstorm hit the Algerian town of Ain Sefra, blanketing the sand dunes in white.
The desert town of Ain Sefra is surrounded by unexpected snow which is several inches deep and typical red sand dunes which stretch out as far as the eye can see were covered in a blanket of white coincides with just as extreme weather in other parts of the world.
This rare event has occurred only three times in the past 37 years nearby the town of Ain Sefra in Algeria because Ain Sefra is located around 1,000 metres above sea level and surrounded by the Atlas Mountains.
When temperatures touching 1 degree Celsius, residents in Ain Sefra enjoyed sliding down small sections of dunes before 40cm of snowfall melted away by the afternoon.
The cold snap comes as Europe and the United States froze in bitter temperatures. The Cape Cod and the Niagra Falls is frozen due to the Winter Storm Grayson that has hit the U.S. east coast.
High pressures over Europe caused cold air to be pulled down into northern Africa and into the Sahara Desert.
Photographer Karim Bouchette, who captured the remarkable images said that we were really surprised when we woke up to see snow again. It stayed all day on Sunday and began melting at around 5 pm.
Last year’s flurry brought chaos across the town, with passengers stranded on buses after the roads became slippery and icy and children made snowmen and even sledged on the sand dunes.
