Space Week 2016 sparks interest of Pakistani Youth in Space Science

The four-day World Space Week 2016 event was held from 19th to 22nd October 2016 at IST Islamabad campus to generate space awareness among the general public and students

Over 7000 space enthusiasts and young students from 150 different schools and colleges of Islamabad and Rawalpindi had the chance to explore the wonders of space science and technology at World Space Week 2016 event held at Institute of Space Technology (IST).

The World Space Week 2016 offers young Pakistanis a chance to enter into the realm of Space Science & Technology and explore new perspective and possibilities for future by participating  165 different space themed events and activities of World Space Week 2016 celebrations.

The four-day World Space Week (WSW) event was held from 19th to 22nd October 2016 at IST Islamabad campus to generate space awareness among the general public and students. ‘Remote sensing-Enabling Our Future’ was the theme for WSW.

World Space Week is an annual event that is observed from 4 October to 10 October 2016 all across the world. This year’s theme, “Remote Sensing: Enabling Our Future,” highlights Earth observation from space for the betterment of the human race. It highlights a host of classic Earth Observation missions such as the U.S. Landsat mission, the work of intergovernmental categories such as GEOSS Category on Earth Observations and emphasizes applications like the environment and agriculture monitoring, land use mapping and new uses such as location-based services.

“Revolution in the space technology is inevitable. It is absolutely vital to have a deep knowledge of space technology and its applications for a country like Pakistan in order to meet the challenges of having accurate information for weather forecasting, disaster management, mobile and satellite communication” according to Dr. Najam Abbas Naqvi, Assistant Professor at Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at IST.

The importance of space technology cannot be denied as it will ultimately lead to the solutions of the world’s problems and betterment of mankind and IST is contributing to the cause in a true sense.

Institute of Space Technology has been regularly conducting WSW activities each year to increase awareness of space technology and to promote its peaceful usage amongst students and the masses in Pakistan.

World Space Week 2016 was concluded with the prize distribution ceremony on October 22, 2016. Siddique Public School, 6th Road Rawalpindi emerged as the Space Champion and Joint Staff Public School and College, Chaklala Rawalpindi was the Space Runner-up of WSW 2016.

Dr. Iqbal Rasool Memon, Dean of IST graced the occasion as chief guest and awarded prizes among the winning students.
