Tensions high as North Korea blows up liaison office with the South

North Koreans are blaming South’s president, unification minister for the current situation

Tensions are on the rise again as North Korea blew up a liaison office with South Korea located at the border town of Kaesong. The office, which was established in 2018, had been in-operational for months due to COVID-19. It was established to improve the ties between the two countries. The North Koreans also called their neighbors “mongrel dogs” bent upon confrontation according to a state media report.

South Korea has said it will respond strongly if their neighbor continued with the confrontation. According to an official statement, the North’s action leads to “abandons the hopes of everyone who wanted the development of inter-Korean relations and peace settlement in the Korean Peninsula”. “The government makes it clear that all responsibility of this situation lies in the North,” the statement continued.

Meanwhile, South Korea’s Unification Minister Kim Yeon-chul took the responsibility of the worsening conditions between the two countries and offered his resignation. North Korean media used very strong language for Kim and suggested him to be “bragging and bluffing, rattling the dialogue partner and stoking [a] confrontational atmosphere”.

Kim Yo-jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, severely criticized the South’s President Moon Jae-in.

“The reason the north-south agreements which were so wonderful did not see…even a single step of implementation was due to the noose of the pro-US flunkeyism into which he put his neck,” Yo-jong said. “Even before the ink on the north-south agreement got dry, he accepted the ‘South Korea-US working group’ under the coercion of his master.”

US President Donald Trump engaged the North Korean leader in talks on two occasions, once in Singapore in 2018 and again in Hanoi, Vietnam in 2019. The talks took place after North Korea test fired several nuclear capable missiles, some of them flying over South Korea and Japan. The talks, however, did not bear any fruit.
