Thousands of protesters in Sri Lanka’s capital Colombo broke through police barricades and stormed the president’s official residence on Saturday in one of the biggest anti-government marches.

Protesters are demanding the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa amid the worsening economic and political crisis in the island nation.

Police used teargas and water cannon against the crowds but as the crowds endured and moved towards the president’s official residence, barricades were broken down and they stormed into the official residence.

Photos and videos from Colombo showed some protesters roaming through the president’s house and taking a dip into the outdoor swimming pool and lying on the garden lawns.

The country of 22 million people is facing a severe economic crisis and a severe shortage of fuel, food, and medicine.
