Pakistan sees the passing of the resolution as a victory of the Kashmir cause

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a Pakistan-sponsored resolution, “Universal realization of peoples’ right to self-determination,” that reaffirms the right to self-determination for the people living under foreign, colonial and alien occupation. The resolution was co-sponsored by 71 countries. The resolution was approved by consensus by the 193 members of the body.

One hundred sixty-eight votes passed a second draft on the right to self-determination and their own state for the Palestinian people. Five members, including the United States and Israel, voted against the resolution while there were ten abstentions.

A victory on Kashmir

Pakistan’s UN Ambassador Munir Akram said that by adopting Pakistan’s resolution, the General Assembly reaffirmed Pakistan’s stance on the Indian Occupied Kashmir.  He said that the resolution “reaffirmed our legal, political and moral case in support of all peoples, including the Kashmiri people, to struggle for self-determination against foreign occupation by all means available to them.”

India’s Right Wing Ultra Nationalist BJP Government has deprived the people of Occupied Jammu and Kashmir the fundamental rights and have turned the entire region into a prison. It has blatantly violated its constitution by removing all special allowances afforded to the people. Use of force, even lethal force, to curb protests is nothing unusual in the occupied valley. The resolution is meant to support the very people of Indian Occupied Kashmir and others oppressed worldwide.

The situation in Myanmar

The Assembly delayed action on two draft resolutions: “Situation of human rights of Rohingya Muslims and other minorities in Myanmar” and “a global call for concrete action for the elimination of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance.” The resolutions will come under review after budgetary considerations.
