Barack Obama, Taylor Swift, Rihanna and Justin Bieber are in the top five for most Twitter followers

US singer-songwriter and pop star Katy Perry has made social media history by becoming the first person to reach 100M followers on Twitter.

According to the website Twitter announcement, the singer Katy Perry has become the first person to achieve the milestone of 100 million Twitters followers.

Perry is comfortably ahead of Canadian pop star Bieber who has 96.7 million and former US President Barak Obama on 90.8 million.

Perry will also be pleased to have almost 15 million more fans than another pop-singer Taylor Swift and more than triple the number of followers than current American President Donald Trump.

Perry, who broke onto the music scene with her 2008 single I Kissed A Girl, joined Twitter in 2009 and has sent out about 8,500 messages since.

The social media platform announced and congratulate the singer; “Today we #WITNESS history,” Twitter said Friday in a tweet, referencing the title of Perry’s recently released fifth album.

“Congratulations @katyperry, the first to reach 100 million followers! #LoveKaty.”

The 32-year-old singer-songwriter tweeted in response of twitter’s congratulations as, “Thank you @Twitter, for always giving me an opportunity to have a voice!”

It’s a big accomplishment even if you factor in the possibility that Perry’s account, like many of Twitter’s high profile ones, likely includes a large volume of fake followers or bots.

Others personality having the most number of followers are mostly pop artists, sports stars, media personalities and politicians including Barack Obama, Justin Bieber and Donald Trump.

Perry recently live-streamed her life for four days to help promote her latest album Witness. She also joined Ariana Grande and other well-known artists for the One Love Manchester benefit concert June 4.

However, it is not clear how many of these accounts’ followers are real people and how many may be fake accounts.

In January researchers in the UK discovered massive collections of dormant fake Twitter accounts.

Twitter says users are banned from writing programs that automatically followed or unfollowed accounts or which “favourited” tweets in bulk.
