Protesters start 3-day strike across Iran demanding abolition of morality police

Must Read

Protesters in Iran have called for a three-day nationwide general strike across Iran after the Iranian government declined to confirm a claim by a senior official that the morality police had been abolished.

Shopkeepers and lorry drivers staged a walkout in around 40 cities and towns on Monday in response to the calls for the strike.

Local newspapers have rather reported an increase in patrols, particularly in religious cities, demanding women to wear the hijab. The police is also reportedly directing shop managers to reinforce hijab restrictions.

The confusion could be partly due to mixed messages coming from a divided regime as it seeks to quell the protests.

Iran has been hit by 11 weeks of unrest since Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman, who was arrested by the morality police, died in police custody.
