Iran has started constructing four additional nuclear power plants in the southern coastal province of Hormozgan with expected total capacity of 5,000 megawatts, the official IRNA news agency reported.
As many as 22 countries pledged at the United Nations climate summit COP28 in Dubai to triple nuclear energy capacity by 2050, saying the revival of nuclear power was critical to cut carbon emissions to near zero in the coming decades.
Around a dozen countries are expected to start electricity production through nuclear power sources in the coming years, Rafael Mariano Grossi, the IAEA director general, said at the World Nuclear Exhibition in Paris.
Leaders from across the globe are set to convene for the inaugural Nuclear Energy Summit in Brussels in March 2024. The summit will be jointly hosted by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Belgium.
